Iraq Receives 450 ISIS Detainees from Syria
“The number of ISIS members transferred to Iraq is very limited out of around 7,000 currently in Syria, some of whom are commanders and leaders in the ISIS terror group,” Alawi explained, according to reports. “Around 450 members have been brought to Iraq, while the vast majority remains in Syrian prisons and have not been transferred. They hold different nationalities.”
The official noted that a portion of those brought to Iraq are Iraqi citizens. “We have sought to accelerate their return over the past period,” he added, emphasizing that the legal process would be applied to all detainees. “Those who committed crimes will be referred to the courts, while those whose guilt has not been proven will be transferred to prisons, and their situations will also be reviewed.”
Regarding the detainees still held in Syrian custody, Alawi said most are foreign nationals from over 40 different countries. “For years, Iraq has officially urged their countries to take them back to be tried under their own laws, but the response from most countries has not been strong, although some have taken steps to implement Iraq’s request,” he said.
Reports indicate that last month, the U.S. military initiated an operation to move ISIS prisoners from northeastern Syria to Iraqi facilities to ensure secure detention. The effort began with 150 fighters being transported from a detention center in Hasakah province to Iraq, with long-term plans to relocate as many as 7,000 detainees under Iraqi control.
