EU, Syria Launch First Political Dialogue to Boost Cooperation

(MENAFN) The European Union and Syria held their first high-level political dialogue on Monday in Brussels, marking a notable step toward expanding engagement and exploring broader cooperation on political, security, and regional stability issues.

The meeting brought together EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, alongside European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica and European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib.

According to a post-meeting statement, both sides focused on the current state of relations and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation amid ongoing regional tensions and security challenges.

Talks also examined developments linked to Syria’s transitional authorities, including efforts related to stabilization, economic and social recovery, and the prospects for a more inclusive political transition. The European side reiterated its commitment to providing humanitarian aid and supporting reconstruction efforts.

“Discussions highlighted the importance of upholding the rights of all Syrian citizens and coordinating efforts to promote stability, humanitarian assistance and socioeconomic development,” the statement said.

The dialogue followed a separate decision by EU foreign ministers earlier the same day to lift the partial suspension of the EU-Syria Cooperation Agreement that had been in place since 2011.

Officials described the move as part of a gradual process aimed at rebuilding diplomatic channels and easing relations between Brussels and Damascus.
